Chapter 19: Feeding Time

The rumble of an engine and the steady thrum of wheels on pavement were the first noises Lenny Allds heard when he woke up.

Oh hell, he thought, wincing and rubbing at his eyes. Did they put me in a bed by the damned road again?

The idea of being put into a bed snapped his eyes open, and he patted down his pockets, relieved to find his few possessions were still there. He had been robbed plenty of times in shelters, not only by those sleeping around him, but by the people running the places as well.

This is a good one, he thought with relief, closing his eyes and settling back into a comfortable position. Bed feels like garbage, though.

He tried to roll around and get comfortable and found he wasn’t in a bed. Or on a cot.

Bare metal greeted his touch, and it was cold and brutal.

The faint odor of motor oil and gasoline finally registered in his mind, and Lenny knew he wasn’t in a shelter, either good or bad.

He was in the vehicle.

He tried to sit up and banged his head against a low ceiling.

In the darkness of his confines, Lenny reached out and found that the walls on either side of him and over his head were made of bars. He pushed, and he pulled, but there was no give to them.

I’m in a cage, he thought, fighting back a rising sense of panic. Someone’s put me in a damned cage!

“You might want to relax,” a man said pleasantly from the front of the cage. “You’re going to want to preserve as much strength as possible. She seems to finish off the stronger ones quicker than the weaker. I don’t know why, but she does.”

“Who?” Lenny whispered.

A sharper voiced man replied, but not to Lenny. “Don’t speak to them. Do you understand?”

“Yes, sir,” the first voice responded reluctantly.

“Do you know why?” the second man asked.

“No, sir,” said the first.

“Because it’s rude to play with food.”

The duo broke out into pleased laughter, but in his cage, a slow and terrible feeling settle into the base of Lenny’s neck. With it came a dull realization.

I’m going to die, he thought. And as soon as it finished crossing his mind, he began to scream.
